Annual Arctic Sea Ice Minimum 1979-2020


Arctic sea ice has declined dramatically over the past few decades in response to a warming climate. The decline in sea ice affects biotic factors from phytoplankton to polar bears as well as abiotic factors like how much incoming solar radiation is reflected back into the atmosphere (albedo).

Sea Algae


As sunlight returns in early spring, microscopic algae (shown here in green) begin to grow in the ice and sea water below. Large concentrations of algae can be found at the bottom of sea ice, called ice algal blooms, and are an important source of food for tiny organisms within the ice and zooplankton below.

Arctic Temperature Changes 1880-2020


The Arctic is a key area of global climate change, with warming rates more than twice the global average. MOSAiC scientists study Arctic ocean, ice and atmospheric processes to better understand how and why the Arctic is warming so rapidly and how this warming might affect global climate.
