Because limestone forms in the ocean, its measurement is close to seawater. Granite, which forms when molten rock (magma) cools and solidifies below the Earth’s surface, has a very different starting point and different measurement. You can see that Earth Scientists have a lot of different ways to study rocks and how they are formed, including looking at them with their eyes, looking at them under microscopes, and analyzing their chemistry using TIMS.
Congratulations! You now have an understanding of what it's like to be an Earth Scientist. Click the chest in the bottom left corner to see a special prize you have unlocked.

Great job indentifying the thin-sections! You are on your way to becoming an Earth Scientist.
Notice the circular objects in the left-side photo are the shells of ocean micro-organisms called foraminifera. The visible fossils and shells are what identify this thin section as a limestone.
In the right-side photo, you can see the interlocking crystals which help identify this rock sample as a granite.

Congratulations, Earth Scientist! You are invited to the Orton Hall Geological Museum to learn more!
Admission to the Orton Geological Museum is open to all people, and free. The Museum Gallery is normally open to the public from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. Occasionally, it is also open on Saturdays. If you are planning to visit on a Saturday, please phone ahead (614-292-6896) to determine whether the Gallery will be open to the public that day.
Orton Hall is located on the south side of The Oval, the central part of the academic campus. Orton Hall is the most distinctive building on The Oval, as it houses a bell tower containing the University Chimes. The chimes ring every 15 minutes, which helps to identify the location of Orton Hall from quite a distance.
Visit the Orton Hall Geological Museum Website: https://ortongeologicalmuseum.osu.edu/
The tour is now complete. You can keep exploring TIMS Lab by clicking the exit button in the corner or start the tour over by clicking the restart tour button next to the chest.
